Gold rush history in Gold Hill

Gold Hill gets its name from the gold rush. According to Wikipedia, gold was found in the early 1850s at Big Bar on the Rogue River, near a hill that gave the city its name. In 1852, Colonel William T'Vault and his family made a claim on the south side of the river and named it Dardanelles.

The city was incorporated in 1895. Wikipedia also says Gold Hill later became known for cement made from local limestone, but gives no date, so we do not state one.

For deeper history, the Southern Oregon Historical Society and the Oregon Historical Society keep archives and exhibits on the region. We have not confirmed Gold Hill-specific pages on either, so we link their home pages.
